The Ten Principles
of Operations Management

Developments like MRP, MRP II, CIM, and FMS seem to come into the field of Operations Management with a bang– and go out with a whimper.  Furthermore, there have been too many failures where there should have been success.  We argue that many of these failures were caused by the violation of one or more of the ten “principles” of Operations Management.  These principles are timeless.  Our message is simple: respect them and violate them at your own peril.

Dr. Steven A. Melnyk, CPIM

Dr. Steven A. Melnyk, CPIM, is Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management at Michigan State University.  He is the lead author of 13 books.  Dr. Melnyk is known for his ability to bridge the gap between the academic and practitioner worlds.  Dr. Melnyk has spoken to various APICS and NAPM/ISM groups at the international, national and regional levels.  He is also a member of the Production and Operations Management Society, the Decision Sciences Institute, and the Society for Manufacturing Engineers.  He has consulted with over 60 companies.  Finally, Dr. Melnyk is the faculty director of education for the Masco Leadership Program in Operations Management (MLP-OM) and the Textron program in Operations Management.  The MLP-OM was recently recognized by Fortune as an example of the most effective relationship between an academic institution and industry.
