Please join us for our
next Professional Development Meeting (PDM) on Thursday September, 16 2010
for a presentation entitled:
Data Security
“Data Security
Breach at (Insert your company name here) Exposes Personal Information”
Recent figures
estimate the cost of a data breach at over $200 per lost record. Don’t
let this headline happen to you!
You may think your
company only has order history, credit card data or customer mailing
lists. This data (as well as other data in your environment that you
don’t know about) could be considered sensitive personal information.
By holding this data, not only is your company obligated to manage it in
the best interest of your consumers, but you may need to be in
compliance with Federal and State laws. To help manage this data,
companies are starting programs to manage information and data
throughout its life cycle.
Our
speaker, David Frei, is a Certified Information Systems Security
Professional and a
Certified
Information Privacy Professional with the Richmond office of KPMG.
David will be presenting a non-technical overview on the following
topics:
·
Recent
statistics on data loss
·
The
environment facing companies today (social and business trends)
·
Regulatory landscape
·
What
can be done
The following
membership from organizations in Richmond will be invited:
·
The
Association for Operations Management (APICS)
·
The
Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP)

President's Message
May 2010
I’m sure we are all relieved to see the sunshine
again after such a snowy winter. Like the weather, we can hope that the
economy is experiencing a spring thaw as well. While some economic
indicators are still mixed, the ISM index has been on the rise and the
rate of unemployment has been decreasing. This recession has and
continues to be very difficult for job seekers, and those with jobs take
little comfort in the security of those positions.
One thing I have noticed about these tough times
though has been the resurgence in the perceived and legitimate value of
professional development. In the “good times” it was easy to be lulled
in to a sense of complacency because we achieved a degree or
certification years ago. Today’s market is more competitive and offers
fewer chances for those in search of new opportunities. With so many
applicants for the same open positions, any chance you have to stand out
should be capitalized upon.
Our April Professional Development meeting was a
multi-society event, and representatives from APICS and the Institute
for Supply Management (ISM) showcased their certification programs and
educational offerings and allowed the attendees to compare and contrast
what each organization has to offer their members. Many of us are
members of multiple professional societies and hold certifications from
more than one as well. In addition to ISM and APICS, the Council for
Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) was also represented.
Thanks to all of you who attended. We hope the meeting helped you decide
if certification is right for you and if so, which certification best
serves your professional development goals.
Development and education should be lifelong
endeavors and certainly serve as a boon in times like these.
On May 11, 2010, for our final event of the
2009-2010 chapter year, Mr. Ray Owens of the Federal Reserve will
present an update on the state of the economy. By May, the first quarter
preliminary GDP numbers will be out for review. This will also be our “Boss’
Night” so please invite your manager or supervisor to attend with
you!

Please join us for our
next Professional Development Meeting (PDM) on Tuesday May 11, 2010
for a discussion entitled:
2010 Economic
Progress Report and Forecast

We
are pleased to have Raymond Owens, III, Vice President and Sr.
Economist, Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, speak to the APICS Richmond
Chapter on May 11, 2010. Ray Owens is a senior economist and research
advisor in the Research Department and has been with the Richmond Fed
since 1983. Owens has published academic articles in fields as diverse
as monetary policy, financial markets, and economic development policy,
but he spends most of his time analyzing national and regional economic
conditions. In addition, he frequently talks to groups on current
economic developments and is regularly quoted in the financial press.
Owens created the Richmond Fed's monthly surveys of manufacturing and
service sector activity.
If you saw Mr. Owens
speak at our May 2009 PDM meeting, this is a great opportunity to
see how our economy has progressed since then in the wake of the
stimulus package, recent consumer spending numbers, and the latest gross
domestic product numbers. Please bring your boss or supervisor to join
in this enlightening and extremely timely discussion on the 2010
Economic Progress Report and Forecast.

As you
are aware, today’s economic climate is a major cause for concern for
everyone, people and businesses alike. Times like this emphasize even more
the value of membership in professional societies such as APICS.
Networking and professional development are two proactive steps we can
take to keep ourselves marketable in a changing environment. APICS offers
the CPIM (Certified in Production & Inventory Management) and CSCP
(Certified Supply Chain Professional) professional certifications as well
as the new Lean Enterprise Workshop.
I would like to draw
your attention to another benefit of APICS Membership – the
APICS Operations Management
Body of Knowledge Framework (OMBOK).
The
Operations Management Body of Knowledge
Framework (OMBOK) defines the scope of the operations
management field and positions APICS' vast body of knowledge to help you
understand the foundation of your profession. As an APICS member, you
receive a complimentary electronic copy of the OMBOK—an
exclusive resource to help you succeed in your profession. To download
your copy, log in at
www.apics.org. (Note:
